Apple, the company that created the modern-day smartphone, is relying on technology customers are already extremely familiar with, like cameras, and taking a backseat when it comes to smartphone innovation. But the company's dedication to familiar technology could be a benefit to the iPhone lineup. Companies that make Android devices have a roster of smartphone firsts that later found their way to Apple products.built a fingerprint sensor into its Atrix 4G phone back in 2011, 2 years before the iPhone 5S brought TouchID to the iPhone. Also in 2011, Samsung brought big phones into the mainstream with its Note series, creating the "phablet," or phone-tablet hybrid, something Apple took note of for its Plus and Max versions of iPhones starting with the 6 Plus in 2014.for example.

the camera is one of the five most important features in a smartphone for customers. Apple ticked that box on the iPhone 11 Pro lineup. This same poll also suggests battery life, ease of use, memory and durability as important to phone buyers, most of which were addressed during the iPhone 11 announcement in September. This reliance on familiar technology also allows Apple to focus on new ventures, like Apple TV+ and other devices and services Apple has not made public yet.

Looking at Apple's history as the creator of the modern smartphone, it's disappointing to see a lack of innovation on the newest iPhones. It's also hard to argue with Apple's decisions when it holds aRelated Tags

This is roughly akin to saying that Apollo 11 landed on the moon to cover up the fact that it did not land on Mars. The iPhone 11 Pro camera is amazing. The software enhancements to IOS 13 are game changing on privacy. Oh, and by the way, the category has peaked.

The battery life on the pro max is innovation on its own

It doesn't matter. People love Apple so much, they will pay $1,000 for the same phone they already have.

After the launch of iPhone X, Apple is trying to find new ventures to explore such as Apple TV+, Apple Credit card. Due to this, it is lacking innovation in terms of iPhone.

Harsh

frediecruze So true. One of the few objective reality, I can't believe I said that, found on CNBC.

What a phone suppose to do that's actually practical? Better cameras, signal, sensors, battery, memory and cpu are all i needed along with good applications. Anything else are pure rubbish

And it is working.

Remember when you guys did actual reporting?

Wait, the camera is the innovation, isn't it? Apple is one of the world leaders in AI driven computational photography. Getting a perfect image with a simple usage model that hides all these complex technology is and has always been the holy grail of the perfect product design.

Tough... folks still going to rush out and get it anyway

SuperTobii Of which the Xs max still has a better camera

I think it would be interesting if phones could offer some sort of projector screen feature, such that images or videos could be played off walls from a phone smartphones

Apple has been stagnant without Steve. Same thing before Steve took over the helm the second time. No innovation, just milking the old product line. They're no longer product & design driven. Google is eng & product driven. At this rate they'll inevitably win the smart phone war.

One plus 🤩

Indeed but that battery life!

Meanwhile, they are selling ten of millions of phones. And stock is at all time highs. Sorry CNBC.

To be fair, it’s not just Apple. I’m ambivalent about all phones these days. None of them are a good enough reason to pay a $1000 to upgrade. I’ll stick with my 8 plus until one of them comes up with something new and worthwhile.

I guess everyone here is completely oblivious to the A13 chip performance and yet additional battery capacity. Cameras are worth the purchase though. Awesome.

I was always an iPhone guy but switched a couple of years ago to a OnePlus 5T and never looked back....it seems Apple is okay with lagging 5 years in technology. Not with my money ....

What a click bait article.

I don't get this... the innovative cameras in the new iPhone hide the lack of innovation otherwise? I am no apple fan whatsoever, but this is silly: the market wants better cameras, and recent AI innovations are having a great impact in image processing. That's it.

Going to look like the Nokia 9 next year

Apple should rather edit their Pages-Templates.

What a ridiculous headline. Embarrassing for cnbc.

Apple been scamming its customers , users of iPhone 5 and 6 won’t be able to use the latest iOS anymore , android users are better off now 😜

Welcome to the update_trap

!Ts NOT H!D!NG. !Ts !NNOVAT!ON PREPAR!NG FOR WHAT NO ONE KNOWS ABOUT YET. THEYre ON PO!NT AND M!GHTY LOYAL TO THE CREAT!ON OF !NNOVAT!ON. BETTER YET, THE PROCESS❗

Apple is no longer competing in smartphone technology. I can tell they spent a ton of money to figure out the integration of watch, phone, and Mac. Instead of pushing for most innovative phone, they want to lock customers down in their ecosystem.

“Samsung has experimented with folding screens, mobile desktop interfaces, gesture controls” Folding screens cracked, mobile desktop interface is useless and gesture control fails majority of the time, they can’t even get finger printing right. Useless gimmicks is not innovating.

This is old news. Apple has been relying on high-quality cameras for the past several years. Its biggest shift, though, is now focusing on services as its revenue generator.

kuku27 Evidently they ran out of ideas yet selling phones are 60% higher prices where competition does not offer only cameras but assures improved quality

As usual

Hopefully we can make up for it with this new phone case. This phone case is also a DRONE!🤩😁 Check it out!

Did the author of this article short apple stock yesterday at all time highs?

Damn... I had that thought just after IPhone 11 Pro launched.

I'm not a current iPhone user but I have been. I think innovations on all phones/handsets are more incremental currently. The foldable/foldout phones are a size innovation. May come down to services (unlimited pic/video storage, etc.) or something along those lines in the future.

👍👍👍👍

I agree. I am an Apple guy through and through but they need a serious step up in the phone innovation to get me to buy a new one

Who else is innovating? everybody is waiting for Apple to come out something new and rush out to copy.

ExCtly .. no inscreen fingerprint scanner either

But we like the cameras

The camera looks like my stove top seriouslly.🤣

I suppose is looking for the iPhone to give out handjobs

Obviously. Like half of the iPhone presentation was about the camera at the Apple event. New filters for when you instagram pics of your avocado toast at bunch 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼. Probably why I won’t upgrade.

AAPL at record high due to their lack of innovation. CNBC used to be a useful source of business information. It isn’t anymore. Watch Fox Business or even Bloomberg.

As if the computational horsepower that goes into the entire photo/video processing is devoid of innovation. As if the chips and hardware to make that happen are devoid of innovation. By the way, I’d venture to guess people use their phone more for the camera than actual talking.

🍎 should concentrate on something like solar energy rather than dumb phones...

A phone is a phone! What more do people want?! And I would love better cameras on my phone!

If I want a really good camera, I’ll buy a really good camera, not a phone. If fact, I already have a great Nikon camera.

For years now

Probably just me, I DO NOT CARE one bit on 'innovation' that has no practically use, buggy and not proven. I am very happy with these lack of innovation overprice iPhone, thanks goodness.

Enough off of Apple ...

Hahaha the camera looks like 👁👁👁

Cannon and Nikon should start putting a SIM card in their professional cameras .... It's not cell phone war but camera war 😂
