PeopleCert founder Byron Nicolaides says the English-language proficiency testing market is growing, and he wants a bigger piece of the Australian pie.

In the late 1990s, Byron Nicolaides suffered from an unusual problem – he became “overly too rich”.

There is also the anecdote about his brief, year-long stint as a shipping magnate after quitting Merril Lynch. “This was not for me, it was only about money. All they did, all day was talk about money ... I wanted to be more useful”. Mr Nicolaides’ recent visit was to catch up with existing clients and meet new ones. It was also to raise awareness of LanguageCert, an arm of PeopleCert, which is an English-language proficiency test that the Department of Home Affairs is considering for the growing, but tightly held, English-language testing space for education and skilled migration.

Mr Nicolaides said demand for English testing had grown rapidly, with about 500,000 people expected to have undertaken a test this year.
