By issuing an injunction, the agency would essentially stymie Facebook from continuing to pursue its efforts to make the three apps interoperable, a that first emerged in January, wherein Facebook said it would begin stitching together the backend tech across its family of apps.
A preliminary injunction would also be a further blow to Facebook's privacy-focused strategy, of which a major component is Facebook's plans to make messaging interoperable and encrypted. In the last week, two of the pillars Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg outlined in his to reorient the company's services around privacy — encryption and interoperability — have come under government scrutiny. last week, Facebook came under threat over its plans to roll out end-to-end encryption across its messaging apps, and the FTC's potential injunction would hamper Facebook's interoperability. Both pillars directly relate to the company's plans to reform its messaging services and at least somewhat its focus on public sharing in News Feed.
When Facebook first announced its interoperability plan, we read it as a broad play to combine, contain, and users across Facebook's messaging ecosystem. But cross-platform interoperability could easily be construed as an antitrust defense because the platforms would share infrastructure, making them more challenging to split up.
