Hobson's Choice: Community companies mounting end of season shows yyc yycarts

Disney’s Newsies runs in the Beddington Arts Centre at 375 Bermuda Drive N.W. from May 12 to June 13 and is already 80 per cent sold out. Book tickets at tickets.storybooktheatre.org.

To close its 53rd season, Workshop has chosen Neil Simon’s 1985 comedy The Female Odd Couple, which is the female version of Simon’s 1965 Broadway hit The Odd Couple, the most popular and successful of his more than 30 stage plays. The original Odd Couple told the story of longtime friends Felix Unger and Oscar Madison who move in together after separating from their wives. The fastidious Felix and the slovenly Oscar are the most mismatched of roommates.

The Female Odd Couple runs in the Pumphouse’s Victor Mitchell Theatre May 12-14 and May 16-20 at 7:30 p.m. with 2:30 p.m. matinees on May 13, May 14 and May 20. Advance tickets are available at workshoptheatre.ca/theoddcouple. Reinitz who directed Each & Every Song, says the 90-minute show is “part musical, part drama that was inspired by Braun’s journey to rediscover and honour herself, and, how despite everything, she continues to lift her songs out of her heart and into the world.”

Something profound happened when MacKenzie read American playwright Cam Torres’s 2019 one-act play Don’t Feed the Bear, which deals with topics such as the importance of human connections, and what it means to be truly vulnerable in the common pursuit of life, liberty and happiness.
