Australia will not retaliate against China for imposing crippling tariffs on barley imports as a “trade war benefits nobody”, Agriculture Minister David Littleproud says. China on Monday evening announced it would follow through on a threat to slap an 80 per cent tariff on Australian barley in a move that fanned trade tensions between the two nations.

There is no need for a trade war, we can work through in a fair marketplace, we produce the best food and fibre in the world,” he said. “We won’t be retaliating that, that won’t advance not only agriculture, it won’t advance any of our sectors. We will keep to our principles, that is what the Australian government does.
