Lyft said it will suspend operations in California at midnight because of a state law requiring it to treat drivers as employees

Lyft Inc. said Thursday it will suspend operations in California as of midnight on Friday, to avoid violating an order that requires it to immediately reclassify its drivers as employees.

A state judge last week gave Lyft and Uber Technologies Inc. until Friday to reclassify their drivers as employees, after California sued the companies alleging they were violating a state law that took effect on Jan. 1. The companies are appealing the decision, but are required to comply unless a stay is granted before the Friday deadline....

I thought drivers were independent contractors, ie 1099, ‘employees’. I utilized Uber yesterday & was picked up in a brand new Lexus. Wasn’t mad at that! Let PEOPLE decide if they want to work for these companies or not. CA just needing the payroll tax $$

Nuria2407 Rightfully so. It wasn’t supposed to be a job or business. It was promoted as a ride share if in the area of someone in need of a ride. The whole biz model is a scam

👏

How about Uber and Lyft refund ALL the arbitrary 'platform' fees they've stolen from drivers over the years...I'm sure a lump sum to ALL previous drivers would buy them some time.

psychoek This your city!?

Drivers knew they were private contractors. Nobody forced them to sign up. Freedom in action.. California knew they were private contractors, made laws to force Lyft to change. Lyft left. Freedom in action. Do you like it when someone forces you to do something?

Tyranny. Gavin Newsom is a corrupt tyrant thug and is partaking in genocide. He knows HydroxychloroquineSavesLives

The government has no business interfering with two parties (drivers and businesses) engaging in free-trade. LorenaSGonzalez stop being a tyrant and start respecting the free-market which is more powerful than you. Vote yes on Prop 22 in California VoteYesOn22

CA killing more jobs. I'm glad I got out of that state.

Dang!

California just cost its residents millions of dollars.

This logic right here.

Good. They should be employees.

A company has the right to hire contractors, and individuals have the right to work as contractors. Government stay out of it! control

Kudos to Lyft for trying to be profitable.

We don't want to treat our employees as employees. 🤔

Good, they are engaged in massive tax fraud and should suspend everywhere. Shareholders should be arrested.

It's like they want to have employees but not give them any benefits for all the BILLIONS AND BILLIONS they bring in, not a cent out Uber worth 75 BILLION! Lift worth almost 25 BILLION!,

The heat is on in California! Will Proposition22 return the state to the old status quo re lyft and Uber drivers? Make a forecast!

Lose, Lose for Uber and Lyft, and big win for other start up companies. Putting ppl out of work is not a good look during these times.

Short lyft. 🤙

It is a liability issue. They know what kind of people they have driving for them and they don’t want to have legal or financial responsibility. Should be a huge wake-up call.

Prosperity brings stupidity

I drove for Lyft with their $150/week rental. I get 1-2 rides per hour that pays avg $7. Avg 15mi per. That’s 2 gallon gas $8. I make $6 net per hr. I have to drive 25 hr just to pay for rental. I eat dollar menu everyday. Fuck u Lyft!

The thing is, drivers know exactly what they're signing up for. If drivers feel exploited, they should leave. But allow those who do still wanna be a contractor for lyft/uber to continue getting an income.

Ridiculous decision! How does this help ClimateChange how does it help us who don’t own cars? Our public transport is horrific, and now this is taken away! Lyft Uber California is going fast backwards!

AirfaresToGo People who want to work as a contract employee, under terms to which both they and Lyft agree, will now not be allowed to work. California continues to promote an anti-business climate. Not surprising...

not a great time to hold a stick really. People need all the jobs they can have during these times.

Going backwards...

This is ridiculous...the drivers know what they are signing up for ...

Them bootleg taxis about to start banking

So come Sunday, thousands of Lyft/ Uber drivers will find themselves out of an income earning opportunity. Well done, California, I hope the union contributions are worth it.

this tells you how corrupt these fkn companies are. they don't want to treat them as employees. they want to take all the money and run away. whats new!?!?! Land of scammers or better America capital scammers of the world

Whaaaaat! Do you mean the people in that work for Lyft and give a percentage of what the make hace to be treated in a decent way?!!

If I was an Uber or Lyft driver in California I would have a website up this weekend with a textable number and general areas. Set your own prices. If you’re older and not tech savvy have your kids/ grandkids help. For guidance model independent tow truck comps. uber lyft

This is going to hurt a lot of people

thedayofdays

They are literally saying if we treat them fairly we will go out of business.

The sad part is, I need a job that will actually help me pay my bills working part-time. I submitted my application and just waiting on my vehicle inspection. Now I can't.

Thats their office building for the whole company...yikes

They will rather set themselves on fire than treat their drivers fairly. What a shame.

It turns out that if Uber and Lyft have to follow laws, they are not tenable. They weren't anyway, that's why they're desperate to pivot.

LiberalismIsAMentalDisorder

As a driver I believe Lyft and uber only want to prostitute the drivers and their cars without any responsibility...

The beauty of the monoculture. Let them walk.

They’re trying to put the squeeze on CA and use drivers as pawns. But if no one can drive Lyft, is CA going to allow all those drivers to collect unemployment since they were never technically employed in the first place? Not sure how that would work.

WhoIsJohnGalt

Lyft: If we can't exploit our drivers, then we won't let them work.

Better unemployed than exploited.

Nice job California! Now you are finding new ways of killing off your citizens from making a buck. Don’t you realize that when people have a job, they pay taxes?

Maybe the workers and riders will vote Republican now.

Hitch hike?

I'm a biz attorney, this new law sucks, especially in California where tech & the gig economy formerly thrived. It's motivated by the desire to unionize the gig economy & put everyone on workers comp. Huge blow to small biz and tech, especially in the remote work environment.

Sad for the folks that need the gig job to make ends meet. I don’t understand people that sign up for the gig and then try to turn it into full employment. Nobody forced them to sign up.

Trend concerns me. CEOS of many co's are making 320x their workers. Or, they dont want to 'admit' employees. GREED is SEETHING in US. How can we get back to treating workers as partners & understanding that this IS THE ECONOMY business potus govwhitmer RepDanCrenshaw

Between the taxes and the regulation, CA is slowly pushing people and business out of its state. They are fortunate to have such beautiful weather.

California is a complete disaster. No wonder people are leaving as fast as they can

Crybabies can’t exploit human capital. Waaaaaa.

Where is John Galt?

Have to agree with the law on this one.

Lyft to suspend rideshare operations in California in response to court rulingJUST IN: Lyft will suspend ridesharing operations in California on Thursday night following a court ruling that ordered the company to classify its drivers as employees instead of independent contractors. California gonna California. Assuming those people didn't actually need those jobs so this is no big deal. Just like electricity isn't important in CA either. I am Lyft driver and if anyone needs a ride in the Bay Area I will continue to operate as an independent contractor. Please message me if you need a pick up. Heaven forbid they treat their employees fairly. 🙄
