The chairman of mining giant BHP has admitted China's demand for the company's coal has fallen as fears escalate over a freeze of Australian exports.

BHP Chairman Ken MacKenzie revealed a number of BHP's Chinese customers have asked to defer shipments of Queensland coal. But it is unclear whether the drop in demand relates to quotas or political tensions. Reports surfaced earlier this week that Chinese authorities had instructed local steel mills and power companies to stop buying Australian coal.
