Materials containing asbestos have been found in mulch at a park in Melbourne’s west. The suspicious materials were found at Donald McLean Reserve in Spotswood by a parent at the weekend, who then made a report to Hobsons Bay Council. Two pieces of material were sent for testing, with results on Wednesday confirming the materials contained asbestos. Council said two types of mulch were used on the reserve — a recycled product and a virgin soft mulch.
au “The more I poked around in this mulch, I was like ‘oh this mulch is all made of old building materials’, like you could just see evidence of plywood. “I noticed chunks of like brick and concrete all mixed in there as well.” But what really horrified Murphy is when he noticed a “chunk of white composite material” in the mulch. He recalled an incident in Sydney from earlier this year when asbestos was found in mulch at the newly built Rozelle Parklands in Sydney’s inner west.
